April Fools Day Comedy Show tonight in West End!

As soon as I saw the amazing Ice Cream Factory space in West End, I was mega inspired. It’s a very funky, New York City slice right in the middle of my favourite Brissie hub of all, West End.

So the fact we get to perform there tonight is very cool indeed. I’m a little curious (slash nervous!) about how it’s gonna run in a space that’s really designed for circus, but in some ways, having to march boldly into the unknown just seems kinda perfect given that that’s what improv is really all about.

Would love to see you there – a new venue means a new reason to celebrate! And you know, with bullying, neurology appointments (for my daughter) and more, it’s been quite a week. I’m looking forward to just forgetting all the crap and PLAYING!

Comic Mummy goes Aural on You, Yo! (or “How to listen to me rabbiting on 4ZZZ”)

So many moons ago I did an interview on 4ZZZ with the lovely Fern Thompsett of the suitably faboosh ‘Waxing Lyrical’ show.

Well now, the interview is online as a official podcast. Huzzah! Triumph! The world needs more cyber-noise!

And noise do I give aplenty. Damn I can talk. And talk. And talk.

My poor hubby.

You can join him in his poorness/ear wackedness by having a little listen over here. Kudos if you do. xx

7 Things To Report Right Now

Taken by Little Miss at this year’s Woodford Folk Fest

1. Little Miss 8′s CT scan came back normal. Big freaking PHEW.

I am yet to be given the all-clear straight from the horse’s mouth (follow-up appointment is tomorrow) but so far, so good. Will write more about this whole rather upsetting experience when it’s a little more distant.

I didn’t say much on here but I was feeling more than a little freaked out when the doctor looked me flat in the eye (yes, ‘flat’) and said “based on what you’re describing my first thought is brain tumour.”

Me: “And based on what you’re describing my first thought is your bedside manner sucks hairy buttocks.”

P.S. Okay, fine I didn’t really say that.

P.P.S. In a splendidly passive aggressive stunt, however, I am changing doctors. Take that, Doctor Tact!

2. Had my second ever surprise party last night! Birthday dinner with great friends, delishy food and frolicking a-plenty. Very impressed by my hubby’s efforts at a) organising it and b) keeping it a secret and c) keeping it a secret and d) keeping it a secret.

I should mention that he told me halfway through the party that he’d only just managed to get his mitts on my phone that very night, and after a quick scroll through my contacts was silently smacking his forehead upon discovering a number of peeps he should have extended the invite to…

Doh.

Oh well. My hubby literally IS Forgetful Jones. Suffice to say that I’m mega impressed – yes, on top of the aforementioned impressed-ness – that he remembered to invite me.

3. Adelaide Fringe this Sunday! AAAGGGHHH!! I haven’t even had time to think about it, other than that I’ll be doing gigs every night I’m down there (6th to 13th). I have quite a few bits to organise between now and then, life has just been flat strapped of late. Hang on, ‘of late’? Who the heck am I kidding?

4. Gumball Theatre is undergoing some changes in the coming weeks. I’m so excited and inspired and have heaps to share. But for now… know that our next show is donating all proceeds to the Queensland Disaster Relief effort.

If you’re into funny stuff and/or supporting the cause, then please, pretty please, spread the word around! Will love you long time.

It’s this Friday. In Brissles. Here’s the poster, yo. (“Breaking Bad” reference intended. Maybe.)

5. Had a birthday break from the sugar detox (as previously agreed upon with my partner-in-healthiness Lizzy) and woke up with a mother of a sore throat. Poo bum wee.

6. Am having a girly Oscars night tomorrow night with me ladies. So excited. I love nothing more than hurling insults at beautiful people while eating questionable amounts of (sugar-free) chocolate. It makes me feel validated.

7. I have embarked on yet another tres exciting project with my tres exciting sister-in-law Lizzy. It more than merits its own blog post or twenty, so shall spill forth deets soon. Here’s a hint though. It’s got something to do with one of my wildest ambitions…

Links of the Week (or WHAT?! You mean there’s more to cyberspace than ME?!)

1. Wintery photos. They take me back to Canada. Le sigh. (Quebecois “le” intended).

2. Where the magic happens.

3. Living vicariously through other people’s lives on Broadway!

4. The wonderful peeps over at BrisStyle are giving away a couple of double passes to this week’s Gumball Theatre show!

5. An improv storytelling rockband? WHAAAAAAAAAATTTTTT?!!?!?!??! I think my head just fell off.

6. This entire site is just unbelievable. Just what I need -another freaking cyber-excuse to ignore the kids.

PS I want to have a joy tantrum.

Goals for 2011

Write and shoot a pilot (and more!) of this sit-com I’m currently working on. Last night my best friend Frankie and I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning (her 30th birthday, no less!) sketching out a backbone for the entire show run. So freaking pumped!

Get Gumball Theatre running in a most professional and awesome manner. Note: I have actually formalised what this entails in my business plan musings, but for the purposes of readability here, will leave it at that!

Develop my solo show to a point where it is well and truly peformance ready – to pitch to festivals and the like for world domination in the latter half of 2011-2012.

Go to LA to become a ton better at solo and musical improv respectively. Happening. Agh.

Go to Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Invite more people over to my house for socialising.

Taking up a new sport. Maybe it’s time to get back into tennis.

Regular date time with the hubbster.

Regular date time with the kidlets.

Eat fresh food.

Exercise daily.

DANCE.

Web comedy shoot, Gumball Theatre and other madness this month

My heavens life is nutty.

This month alone:

1. I have scored a most fabulous gig (fab in that it is completely and utterly up my alley in a very un-sordid way) shooting some comedic style online videos with my little toddler the Cass-meister! We’re off to the big smoke in a fortnight to join forces in what will hopefully be some funny onscreen collaborating. Dig!

2. I am madly preparing for the first show of the year of my favourite creation of late (namely cos it didn’t hurt on the way out): Gumball Theatre! Yay! We already have quite a few peeps coming – PS today is the LAST day to book a group of 5 and get a free bottle of bubbly waiting for you on arrival, deets are over here – and so am super pumped. But you know, in the meantime: rehearsals. Organising. Stuff like that.

3. I am MCing a family fun day at Bribie Island for Australia Day! Merriment! Sausage sizzles! What more could you ask for?

4. My best friend is turning 30 next week. I want it to ROCK so hard for her. Stay tuned.

5. I’m contemplating making scones. Except the last time I did they turned out like hard little rocks of awful. As unstable as a career in showbiz is, there is one thing I know for absolute certain: I will NEVER be on Masterchef. EVER.

Video from the Gumball Theatre launch!

I’ve been slogging my guts out this afternoon – you know, in a very sit down and exert no energy whatsoever kinda way – to put this little thingamijig together.

It ain’t perfect, but I do like it.

5 Things That Have Happened During My Accidental Blogging Hiatus

My little dude with his little dudey plaque

1. I have officially been redeemed – at least for now – as not COMPLETELY sucking at this mothering thing. My babies won awards! Which you know, of course, is nothing more than an utter reflection on MY awesomeness! Huzzah! I celebrated by coating their respective trophies with tequila and licking it off while humming “We Are the Champions.”

2. I touched a snake. Three different ones, actually. If you know me and how much I am TERRI-FREAKING-HORRIFIED by reptiles (and a little side thanks there to Harry Potter for making things worse), then you will fully implode right about now. Thank you Bunnings Christmas party.

My new HAH!!!!

3. I have taken discovered that I am possibly finding too much enjoyment from young children asking me about my new hair. My fave answers so far to the “Why do you have pink hair?” question:

“I ate too many strawberries.”

“What? I have pink hair? AAGH!”

“When your mummy says you’ve had enough ice-cream…LISTEN.”

4. I have bought an all-new and exciting gumball machine!!! Now I just have to work out how to keep the kids’ paws off it before show-time. I guess that was one side-effect of naming the company something that excites children. Hmmmm.

5. I have seen the new Harry Potter movie and loved it. I have also seen the new Megamind movie and loved it. I have also seen the new rain forecasts coinciding with school holidays and…guess.

Gumball Theatre: the official launch debrief (that’s NOT brief)

At the After-Party: me with the always-fabooshy fairy Mary and hubby Fritz!

Forgive me for taking a few days to recover from the insanity that was the lead-up to and happening of the Gumball Theatre launch.

Phew!

Seriously, at some point there it hit me that the only time I’ve put more effort into something was my wedding.

However the one thing about my wedding that disappointed, was how because I’d spent so much time, thought and effort on planning the whole shebang, when it came to actually experiencing the day, my managerial mind kind ruined it. You know, the part of your brain that’s interrupting your wedding with commentary like “We’re running behind!” and “Can everybody actually hear the music over these crashing waves?” and “Oh dear heavens, why is there an 80 year old man wearing Speedos walking through our wedding?” True story.

Anyhoo, point is, because I’d been so focused on managing the day, I fell dismally short of experiencing it.

So I was perhaps understandably concerned that I might meet a similar fate come this launch. i.e. that I’d be so consumed with the logistics that I wouldn’t actually enjoy it. Which you know, wouldn’t be the end of the world, except that where improvised comedy is concerned, if you’re not enjoying yourself onstage, then chances are, nobody else is either.

Enter a conversation with my 6-year-old.

“Mum?” he said, eyeing off the golden gumball machine we’d painted up for the show. “Can I have that?”

“Sorry honey,” I said. “That’s for Gumball Theatre.”

“Awwwww! But I want it. It’s awesome!”

“Sorry mate. We need it.”

“When you’ve finished the show can I have it?”

“We need it for all our other shows too, buddy.”

“Awwww,” he said. “When you’ve quit Gumball Theatre can I have it?”

“I’m never quitting Gumball Theatre.”

“Never?” he said.

“Never,” I said.

“You mean it will still be going when you’re an old lady?”

“Yep.”

“It will still be going when you’re dead?”

“I hope so!”

“Awwwwww.”

A pause. Then: “Can you make me another one then?”

I wish I could really communicate what that chat did to me. I’ll try.

Up to that point I’d been putting a ton of pressure on myself for the launch to be, well, you know, the BEST THING EVER. But after this conversation with my pint-sized Mister Miyagi, I realised something I hadn’t known before: just how committed I am to this in the long-term. I guess what I realised is that my vision for Gumball Theatre is a marathon, not a sprint.

Meaning that we’ve got a lot of time to build the company and the shows up to what we want them to be – the launch was exciting, absolutely, and I hoped it would rock, naturally, but was it the be all and end all in terms of marking our chances of success? Nup!

With the pressure off, I made up my mind just to focus on what I could control on the night: having fun.

And HOW.

Wow oh wow.

We had a beautiful, buzzy and up-for-it crowd and we had a blast. It was such a fun, silly, playful show – cream pies and all – followed by a rocking time hanging out at the after-party up the road. We got many awesome comments from folks in the audience, including many of the “we’re SO coming to the next one!” variety. So all in all, rock.

LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We already have pages of notes of stuff we want to make better for next time, but for our first show, I was completely and utterly stoked. (Seriously. It’s now four days later and I’m still on a high.)

I shall post proper show pics soon – and some video! Our official launch photographer is getting her stash sorted out and I will post more here the moment I get them in my hot little hands.

In the meantime, thanks for listening to me rabbit on about all things Gumball. This truly is a momentous chapter in my life, I know it already. I’m so completely and utterly pumped. Not just about the launch, but about the future.

Now excuse me while I brace my glutes for this long distance thang.

Dawg.
